Katie

I am a Seattle Public Schools (SPS) teacher who currently teaches AP U.S. Government and Politics and has taught for 5 years in SPS middle and high school history classrooms.

Originally from the East Coast, I graduated summa cum laude from Syracuse University with a B.A. in Social Studies Education, History, and Spanish. I can support students in bilingual literacy and have worked at Spanish speaking schools and summer programs. I hold a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from City University, where I graduated summa cum laude. I am also a National Boards Certified teacher.

I believe that all people are innately curious and capable. My teaching philosophies center around project based learning, growth mindset, and universal design for learning. I have over five years of experience with differentiating instruction for students with IEPs to meet them where they are at in the learning process. My specialties include designing relevant projects that center students and help them develop the necessary skills to meet grade level standards. I enjoy working with any age of learner on goal setting and growth in literacy and writing skills.

Kelly

I hold a Master's of Education in Adult Education from Western Washington University and a Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Naropa University. I have taught research, essay, literature, and poem writing courses for over twenty years at South Seattle College and Lake Washington Technical College.

In particular over the last few years, students and I have enjoyed reading and writing poems together in face-to-face and online classes, celebrating the good, the bad, and the ugliness that come out of this process. There is so much to be learned from producing sentences and stanzas that soar as well as ones that fall flat! We all are just doing our best muddling through together, and what we have figured out along the way is that writing conversational English, usually in subject-verb-object order, is the way to transmit ideas lightning fast from one brain to another!

I have 3 daughters, tweens and teens, all of whom struggle with learning disabilities. I have years of experience helping people normalize and talk through their writing anxieties.

Finally, I love crafty endeavors, like making soap and junk journals, usually with a good murder mystery audio book playing in the background.
