About the Role
Write Seattle is looking for reading and writing tutors who can meet students on the East Side, in Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, etc.
Tutors work one-on-one with elementary-, middle-, high-school, or adult students to support their growth in writing, reading, study skills, and more. Depending on the student, sessions might focus on building reading fluency and comprehension, strengthening essays and other writing, preparing for tests, or developing the organizational and study habits that help students work more independently. Each tutor brings their own methods and materials and decides how to structure sessions to fit the student in front of them.
At this time, we have a particular need for tutors who are keen to work with elementary and/or middle school students.
Tutors choose when, where, and with whom they are open to working. We do not have an office, so tutors generally meet students at public libraries. Building up to your desired number of hours usually takes some time, and even our busiest tutors rarely exceed 20 hours per week, since families typically seek tutoring during after-school hours and on weekends.
There are some hoops to jump through in getting started, and students will often work with the same tutor for a full academic year or more, so this position will not make sense if you're just looking for a couple months of work.
Requirements
Undergraduate degree, ideally one that emphasized reading, writing, or teaching. (Graduate degree is a plus!)
Outstanding writing skills & academic record. (Other areas of expertise, like history, public speaking, science, math, etc. are all big pluses!)
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Patient, friendly, confident demeanor.
Enough experience teaching reading and/or writing skills that you can work independently with students. There is no Write Seattle curriculum nor any set structure for how tutors conduct sessions. Tutors must be confident meeting with a student, assessing their needs, and then coming up with prompts, readings, or other assignments that will support their academic growth. Tutors need not work with all age groups, but must have an understanding of the categories of academic competency relevant to the students they do work with.
Able to meet students in Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, or on the East Side. (You don't need to be available to meet in all of the above, but this posting is specifically targeting a tutor on the East Side.)
