About the Role
Tutors work one-on-one with elementary-, middle-, high-school, or adult students to support their growth in writing, reading, study skills, and more. You choose when, where, and with whom they would like to work. We are, however, looking for a tutor available to meet students in the Northwest part of Seattle, i.e. in the Ballard and/or Greenwood neighborhoods. We do not have an office. Contracting tutors work independently with Write Seattle students, often at the library.
At this time, we have a particular need for tutors who are keen to work with elementary and/or middle school students.
This is part-time contract work, and it will usually take some time to build up to your desired number of students/hours per week. And even if you were fully available, it'd be hard to get more than 20 hours/week given the hours when students are generally looking for tutoring: between 3:30 and 8pm on Mondays through Thursdays, or on the weekend.
Requirements
Undergraduate degree, ideally one that emphasized reading, writing, or teaching. (Graduate degree is a plus!)
Outstanding writing skills & academic record. (Other areas of expertise, like history, public speaking, science, math, etc. are all big pluses!)
Strong organizational and communication skills
Patient, friendly, confident demeanor
Enough experience teaching reading and/or writing skills that you can work independently with students. There is no Write Seattle curriculum nor any set structure for how tutors conduct sessions. Tutors must be confident meeting with a student, assessing their needs, and then coming up with prompts, readings, or other assignments that will support their academic growth. Tutors need not work with all age groups, but must have an understanding of the categories of academic competency relevant to the students they do work with.
About the Company
Write Seattle is a very small business that tries its darndest to do right by tutors. We are a simple, streamlined enterprise where tutors are paid significantly more than at other tutoring companies. We enable tutors to focus on what matters: providing outstanding academic support to students.
