About the Role
Early-literacy tutors work one-on-one with elementary-school students to support their growth in writing, reading, and more. They choose when, where, and with whom they would like to work.
We do not have an office. Contracting tutors work independently with Write Seattle students, often at one of the libraries the tutor chooses as a “home library.”
***Note: Unless you live in Seattle or nearby, this position probably won’t be convenient. While all tutors have the option to take online sessions, we are not currently looking for online-only tutors.***
This is part-time contract work, and it will usually take some time to build up to your desired number of students/hours per week. And even if you were fully available, it'd be hard to get more than 20 hours/week given the hours when students are generally looking for tutoring: between 3:30 and 8pm on Mondays through Thursdays, or on the weekend.
Requirements
Undergraduate degree, ideally one that emphasized reading, writing, teaching, or early-childhood development. (Graduate degree is a plus!)
Patient, friendly, confident demeanor
Enough experience teaching early-literacy skills that you can work independently with students. There is no Write Seattle curriculum or any set structure for how tutors conduct sessions. Tutors must be confident meeting with a student, assessing their needs, and then coming up with lessons and projects that will support the growth of their reading and writing skills.
About the Company
Write Seattle is a very small business that tries its darndest to do right by tutors. We are a simple, streamlined enterprise where tutors are paid significantly more than at other tutoring companies. We enable tutors to focus on what matters: providing outstanding academic support to students.
