About the Role
Write Seattle is looking for college-admissions essay tutors. Tutors work one-on-one with high-school juniors and seniors, guiding them through brainstorming, structuring, drafting, and revising their personal statements and supplemental essays.
Tutors choose when, where, and with whom they are open to working. We do not have an office, so tutors generally meet students at public libraries or online. Building up to your desired number of hours usually takes some time, and even our busiest tutors rarely exceed 20 hours per week, since families typically seek tutoring during after-school hours and on weekends.
There are some hoops to jump through in getting started, so this position will not make sense if you're just looking for a couple of months of work.
Most college essay tutors also work as general reading and writing tutors; you are welcome to apply for both positions concurrently.
Requirements
Undergraduate degree, ideally one that emphasized reading, writing, or teaching. (Graduate degree is a plus!)
Outstanding writing skills & academic record.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Patient, friendly, confident demeanor.
Enough familiarity with the college admissions essay and experience guiding students through the writing and revision process that you can work independently with them. There is no Write Seattle curriculum nor any set structure for how tutors conduct sessions. Tutors must be confident meeting with a student, assessing where they are in their essay process, and then determining how to help them brainstorm, structure, draft, and revise their personal statement and supplemental essays. Because a strong college essay has to sound like the student, tutors must be skilled at drawing out a student's own voice and ideas and guiding revisions.
